Built in 1937 by the Civilian Conservation Corps, Double Lake offers a little of everything including camping, fishing, picnicking, hiking or just getting back in touch with nature.  The Double Lake Recreation Area is open to day use and camping year round, and is a popular destination all four seasons.Campers have ample places to park their gear with 65 family sites (some with electric and sewer hookups) and an additional nine groups sites. Thirty-seven campsites are accessible for persons with disabilities. With national forest trees surrounding the area, each site is equipped with a picnic table, level pad, lantern holder and a campfire ring or cooking grill.  Showers, drinking water and toilet facilities are located throughout the campground areas.

  • 14th May 2015 Woo-Hoo and Thank You!!! Double Lake has risen over 5 inches thanks to the recent rains, and we are, at this time, still enjoying the run-off!!!!

    Looking prettier, is it not? More rain, not as heavy, is still in the 10 day forecast.

  • 4th May 2015 Under gorgeous skies this weekend, over 500+ riders and twice as many spectators enjoyed the GHORBA Big Ring Challenge 2015 at Double Lake Recreation Area in the Sam Houston National Forest!

  • 30th April 2015 The Big Ring Challenge Mountain Bike Race will be held this weekend, May 2 and 3rd at Double Lake Recreation Area. Many participants, as well as spectators, have opted to overnight camp with us, and we are always happy to see returning friends to share the excitement of the many events!

    After last Sunday night's heavy wind and rains, the forecast for this week-end thus far appears to be very promising for all. We have first-come, first-served sites available, so if you don't have a reservation, the possibility of your getting a site for a night is always better the earlier you can come.
