The park is named after the famous Slide Rock, a stretch of slippery creek bottom adjacent to the homestead. Visitors may slide down a slick natural water chute or wade and sun along the creek. The swim area is located on National Forest land which is jointly managed by Arizona State Parks and the U.S. Forest Service. Together these areas have seen the making of many Hollywood movies such as “Broken Arrow” (1950) with James Stewart, “Drum Beat” (1954) with Alan Ladd and Charles Bronson, “Gun Fury” (1953) with Rock Hudson and Donna Reed, and a scene from “Angel and the Badman” (1946) with John Wayne.

On July 10, 1985, Arizona State Parks purchased the park property from the Arizona Parklands Foundation. The park was dedicated in October 1987, and accepted onto the National Register of Historic Places on December 23, 1991.

If you visit Slide Rock Park in the canyon, don’t forget to stop at our Slide Rock Market! The market has snacks, prepared foods, ice cream, and gift items.

You can find the state park’s web site, with park hours and fees, as well as more pictures and videos, here.

For the first time, Northern Arizona has an organized snow play area with plowed and managed parking, hot beverages, sleds and other concessions. Activities include sledding, cross country skiing, snowshoeing, and playing in the snow.

From Interstate 40, follow Hwy 180 north 2.8 miles past Snowbowl Road to mile marker 226 (approximate), turn left onto Forest Service Road 222B. The exit is clearly marked as “Wing Mountain Snow Play Area.” You can find a map here.

For up to date information on opening and closing (we are, of course, somewhat at the mercy of Mother Nature), check out our Facebook page below or our website at SnowPlayAZ.com.

Patagonia Lake is a beautiful lake nestled in the hills near Nogales, south of Tucson and is the centerpiece of Patagonia Lake State Park. It is conveniently located near a number of top Arizona attractions, including Kartchner Caverns and Tombstone, Arizona. The lake spans over 250 acres and is 2-1/2 miles long.

Patagonia Lake is popular for a variety of recreational activities, including camping, picnicking, water skiing, fishing, and hiking. Created by the damming of Sonoita Creek, the lake is habitat for bass, bluegill, crappie, and catfish, and is stocked with rainbow trout during the winter. For anglers’ sake, the east half of the lake is designated a no wake area. Fishing docks for handicapped anglers is located at the Patagonia Marina and behind the Sonoita Creek visitor center.
