Locations in Hiawatha National Forest-East, Michigan

Recreational clean-up and hazard tree work is being conducted by the Forest Service for Soldier Lake Campground. These management actions are necessary for preservation for the dynamic ecosystems. Along Highway M-28, mature Jack Pine were removed to make space for a younger stand, which is a more suitable habitat for Kirtland's Warblers. In the campground, trees were removed to allow sunlight to reach the ground, encouraging natural regeneration of the understory and the healthy growth of remaining trees. Both areas will also have seedlings placed strategically over the next couple of years, so as to enhance habitat and visitor experience. If you have any questions, please contact the Forest Service.
